Glen and Betty Jo Schmidt had a daughter, Kathy Schmidt, who was attending Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado. Inspired by her mentor Dr. Robert Hawkins, Kathy was majoring in music education with the goal of being a band director, when she was tragically killed in an accident on the family farm. The Schmidt's later sold some of their farm land and used a portion of the money to endow a scholarship through the Women Band Directors International, in honor of their daughter Kathy and Robert Hawkin's wife, Kate Hawkins. This scholarship would become known as the Ladies of the Podium Scholarship. Kathy's dream of being a band director and Kate's support of her inspirational husband will live on in the legacy of their gift and through the recipients of this scholarship.
