Volkwein Memorial Scholarship

Virginia Sheplar Volkwein received her Bachelor of Arts degree in  Arts from Slippery Rock State College in Pennsylvania. She began her teaching career in the suburbs of Pittsburgh and later moved the North Hills School District to serve as Art Supervisor."Ginny's" hobby was the arts and she was made an honorary member of the Pittsburgh Opera Auxiliary for her outstanding contributions. Intrigued by Native American turquoise jewelry, Virginia designed her own pieces which were then handcrafted by  talented Native Americans.

Her husband, Walter Volkwein, owned Volkwein Brothers, Inc., a family owned music business spanning four generations. It was this business that took the Volkweins around the world three times as they promoted their industry. Walter was influential in the field  of music and, among other honors, was elected an Honorary Associate Member of the American Bandmasters Association.

This scholarship is dedicated to the memories of Virginia and Walter Volkwein.

Walter Volkwein originally funded this scholarship in his first wife's name. He is now survived by his second wife, Helene, and it is through her generous contributions that this scholarship continues to be awarded to aspiring young women band directors.
